The sugar and plastic taxes were supposed to enter into force in January 2023, but the Italian Budget Law for 2023 has postponed the timeline.
The “Plastic Tax” regulates the consumption of single-use items made of (even partially) plastic materials that have the function of or are intended to contain, protect, handle or deliver goods/food products.
The “Sugar Tax” covers non-alcoholic sweetened beverages, meaning finished products and those prepared to be used as such after dilution.
The new timeline for both taxes entering into force is January 2024.
