The El Salvadorian Ministry of Finance has announced control characters such as “\n” and “\r” will no longer be permitted when issuing electronic tax invoices (Documentos Tributarios Electrónicos, DTE).
Actions to be taken by taxpayers
Taxpayers who are unsure if their invoices contain prohibited characters should consult their IT department and make any necessary changes.
No action is required for taxpayers not using the prohibited control characters.
Timeline
The control characters will no longer be allowed as of May 15, 2025.
Penalties
Taxpayers who continue to issue electronic tax invoices with prohibited characters may be subject to penalties following the Tax Code.
